WRD Initiates Flood Mitigation Measures for Northeast Monsoon

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is actively engaged in flood mitigation efforts in preparation for the upcoming northeast monsoon. Their ongoing work focuses on enhancing the Gerugambakkam and Kolapakkam channels. In addition to these improvements, the WRD is planning interventions at critical points and the establishment of links to the Adyar river to manage additional flow during the monsoon season. These efforts will resurrect some channels around Porur Lake and those leading into the Adyar River, which have been non-functional for nearly two decades.

The aim is to mitigate flooding in areas surrounding Porur Lake, including Ganesh Nagar, Madha Nagar, Madhanandapuram, and Kolapakkam. About 30% of the work on the Gerugambakkam and Kolapakkam channels has already been completed. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena inspected the ongoing works to address waterlogging in various areas, with culverts being reconstructed and earthen channels de-silted.

The enhancements are expected to increase the carrying capacity of minor channels up to 1,200 cubic feet per second. The extensive improvements, including desilting, widening, and flood protection walls, are aimed at effectively managing floodwater and reducing waterlogging problems in the region.
