The Water Resources Department (WRD) in Chennai has installed an extensive network of sensors and rain gauges across 253 locations to bolster real-time flood forecasting and urban flood mitigation. This includes automatic rain gauges, weather stations, water level recorders, and gate sensors spread over the Chennai basin, covering waterbodies in the city and neighboring districts.
Data from these devices will feed into a comprehensive real-time flood forecasting system, aiding in the timely assessment and management of flood risks. A control room at the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration and Disaster Management will centralize this data, providing seamless and transparent dissemination of flood warnings. Additionally, the project integrates with existing systems and includes a dedicated website for public access, enhancing Chennai’s resilience against monsoon-related flooding.
