WRD Clears Encroachments Along Adyar River for Eco-Restoration Project
The Water Resources Department (WRD) took a decisive step towards the Adyar eco-restoration project by removing encroachments along the Adyar river in Anakaputhur.
Despite facing resistance from local residents, the WRD cleared a section of encroached structures as part of an ongoing effort to widen the river. Previously, the department had identified approximately 700 structures encroaching on river space in areas like Dobikhana Street, MGR Nagar, Thai Mookambigai Nagar, and Quaide Milleth Nagar, issuing notices to around 400 of them.
During the recent operation in Anakaputhur, 25 structures were cleared, and residents are set to be resettled in tenements located in Thailavaram, Maraimalai Nagar. The removal of encroachments is expected to allow an additional 50 meters of river widening, and the reclaimed space will be utilized for constructing modular sewage treatment plants and other essential facilities as part of the eco-restoration initiative.
