A 39-year-old woman, identified as Loudhuammal of Kannagi Nagar, has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold jewellery from the Sholinganallur branch of the State Bank of India. The theft was discovered during a jewelry audit when it was found that 24 borrowers’ pledged jewelry had gone missing from the bank’s safe lockers.
Loudhuammal, who had worked as conservancy staff in the bank for four years, was entrusted with placing pledged jewelry into plastic covers after valuation by the bank staff. However, she managed to steal the jewelry from the covers before placing it in the safe. The police have recovered 54 sovereigns of stolen gold from her.
