WHO Chief: Gaza’s Health System Collapsing Amid Israel-Hamas War
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that Gaza’s health system is collapsing, describing the impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict on health as catastrophic. The WHO Executive Board adopted a resolution urging prompt and unobstructed humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
Tedros reported that only 14 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza are partially functional, with thousands of reported deaths, including children, injuries, and a large displaced population. The WHO has verified over 449 attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza and the West Bank and 60 attacks in Israel since the conflict began on October 7. Tedros emphasized the crucial need for a ceasefire to safeguard and enhance the health of the people in Gaza.
