Water Resources Department Initiates Phase II of Flood Mitigation Work Around Porur Lake

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is set to commence the second phase of flood mitigation projects in and around Porur Lake and the Adyar River in an effort to address annual flooding issues in areas like Mugalivakkam, Kolapakkam, and Manapakkam. Valued at ₹88 crores, these projects will focus on improving the Gerugambakkam channel in Kundrathur and Kolapakkam channel-I.

Additionally, a missing link between Kolapakkam channel-I and Link Odai along Kolapakkam-Pozhichalur Road will be bridged. The channels have suffered encroachment and degradation due to urbanization, and the WRD plans to widen, desilt, and construct flood protection walls in vulnerable areas. To mitigate flooding during the upcoming Northeast monsoon, critical interventions will be made in stretches with inadequate channel or culvert dimensions.

Furthermore, land acquisition for enhancing Kolapakkam channel-II and Manapakkam channel’s capacity is underway, ensuring better flood control in affected areas.
