Warming Indo Pacific Warm Pool Linked to Intensification of Cyclones in North Indian Ocean

An analysis by the independent weather blogging site Chennai Rains reveals that the North Indian Ocean basin has experienced more intense and slow-moving cyclones over the past two decades. The rapidly warming Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP), situated in the western Pacific Ocean and the eastern Indian Ocean, is identified as a major driver for these cyclones.
The IPWP, warming faster than any other ocean globally, influences weather patterns over Asia and the Indian subcontinent by increasing sea surface temperatures in the North Indian Ocean basin. The analysis indicates a rise in the number of intense cyclonic storms, particularly since 2003, impacting the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This trend could have implications for monsoon dynamics, rainfall patterns, and disaster management in the region.
