Viral Infections Keeping Chennai Hospitals Busy

Chennai’s hospitals are dealing with an influx of viral infections, affecting both children and adults. While many hospitals report numerous cases of respiratory illnesses, there has also been an increase in dengue cases among children and a consistent number of chikungunya cases. Dr. Suresh Kumar, an infectious diseases consultant at Apollo Hospitals, noted that they are observing patients with chikungunya symptoms, such as joint pain, in addition to dengue cases.

The joint pain associated with chikungunya, although not as severe as in previous outbreaks, can persist for up to 14 days, affecting wrists and ankles and resulting in rashes. Meanwhile, the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children reports the expected seasonal rise in respiratory infections, with many affected children under one-year-old experiencing bronchiolitis and breathing difficulties.
