Union Home Ministry Allocates ₹561 Crore for Chennai Flood Risk Management Project

The Disaster Management Division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved funding of ₹561 crore for an integrated urban flood management project in the Chennai basin. The project aims to address flood risks by re-establishing surplus canals for former minor irrigation tanks in the city, restoring eight water bodies covering 484 acres, and implementing remote-operated surplus regulators and water supply regulators for reservoirs during emergencies.

The Greater Chennai Corporation officials, led by Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan, presented the flood mitigation proposals during a meeting of the sub-committee of the National Disaster Mitigation Fund’s Urban Flood Risk Management Programme in New Delhi. The initiative includes efforts to route floodwaters through the Madhavaram tank in the Kosasthalaiyar basin.
