The United Nations Security Council has once again failed to reach an agreement on a draft resolution aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The draft resolution, proposed by the E-10, a group of 10 non-permanent member states of the Security Council, faced opposition from the United States and the United Kingdom, both of which possess veto power. While discussions about humanitarian pauses have taken place, there is a lack of consensus within the Security Council on this matter.
China’s UN Ambassador, Jun Zhang, called for an urgent ceasefire to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, highlighting the dire situation and the impact on Palestinian civilians, especially children. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, emphasized ongoing discussions within the Council and expressed concerns over the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel and indiscriminate attacks by Israel on the Gaza Strip. The situation remains deadlocked as previous attempts to pass resolutions have faced challenges, including US vetoes.
