UN Appeals for $46.4 Billion to Address Global Humanitarian Crisis in 2024
The United Nations has issued an urgent appeal for $46.4 billion for 2024 to address the growing humanitarian crisis affecting 181 million people worldwide. The Global Humanitarian Overview 2024 emphasizes the critical needs arising from catastrophic hunger, mass displacement, conflicts, and the worsening climate emergency.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths commended humanitarian efforts but stressed that the $20 billion received so far in 2023 is only a third of what is needed. The focus for 2024 will prioritize 181 million people in 72 countries, reflecting a strategic reduction from the $57 billion allocated in 2023. The drivers of need include conflicts, the global economic situation, and the climate crisis, with conflicts becoming more entrenched and devastating for civilians globally.
Funding shortfalls in 2023 led to severe consequences in regions like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Yemen, and Nigeria. Griffiths emphasized the critical role of funding and the safety of humanitarians and those they assist.
