UN Adopts Gaza Aid Resolution Without Call for Hostilities Suspension

The United Nations Security Council has approved a diluted resolution urging immediate accelerated aid deliveries to the distressed population in Gaza but removed the original demand for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” between Israel and Hamas. The vote, delayed for an extended period, resulted in 13 in favor, with the United States and Russia abstaining.

The U.S. abstention prevented a second American veto on a Gaza resolution, and the adoption came after the U.S. had vetoed a Russian amendment attempting to reinstate the call for an immediate suspension of hostilities. The compromised resolution aims to address the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza without explicitly demanding a cessation of ongoing hostilities.
