Umar Khalid Denied Bail in Delhi Riots Conspiracy Case

Former JNU scholar Umar Khalid’s bail plea was rejected by a Delhi court on May 28, 2024, in connection with the larger conspiracy case related to the North East Delhi riots of 2020. Arrested in September 2020, Khalid faced accusations of orchestrating protests at 23 locations, allegedly leading to the riots. The court cited charges of criminal conspiracy and violations under the UAPA as grounds for denying bail.

Despite previous attempts for relief, including appeals to the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court, Khalid remains in custody, with his latest bail application emphasizing delays and seeking parity with other accused individuals. Notably, other accused, including Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, and Asif Iqbal Tanha, were granted bail by the Delhi High Court in the same conspiracy case.
