Ukraine Confirms Drone Attack on Russian Military Air Base Near Moscow
Ukrainian authorities have officially acknowledged conducting a drone attack on the Shaykovka military air base near Moscow, Russia. The attack resulted in the damage of at least one aircraft stationed at the base, according to reports. The Shaykovka air base, located in Russia’s Kaluga region, operates Tupolev Tu-22M3 supersonic long-range bombers that have been used in Russia’s operations against Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.
The Ukrainian air force had previously reported launching four Kh-22 air cruise missiles toward Ukraine from the same air base. Ukrainian authorities stated that the attack was carried out in coordination with the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.
Although Russian social media sources mentioned the damage to an unused aircraft at the airfield, official confirmation has not been provided. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin later announced that Russian air defense had downed two attack drones over the capital region, temporarily disrupting flights at major airports in the area.
