UDF Protests Disruption Over Remission Controversy in Kerala Assembly
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) disrupted the Kerala Legislative Assembly proceedings on June 25, protesting the alleged political conspiracy to grant remission to convicts in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case. Speaker A.N. Shamseer denied an emergency debate request by K.K. Rema, Chandrasekharan’s wife and RMP legislator, intensifying tensions.
Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan accused the government of hastening the remission process since 2018, undermining judicial rulings. Opposition members stormed the Speaker’s dais, leading to adjournment amidst loud slogans. Satheesan criticized the government’s leniency towards convicts, including granting frequent paroles and favorable prison conditions. Rema vowed to petition the Governor and the High Court against the remission, while UDF leaders threatened street protests if the convicts were released.
