Authorities in China’s Shanxi province have detained two individuals for allegedly causing damage to a section of the Great Wall using an excavator, according to state media reports. The incident took place in Yangqianhe township of Youyu county, where a gap in the wall was created.
Police investigations revealed that a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman used the excavator to breach the wall, causing “irreversible” damage to its integrity and safety. The damaged area, known as the 32nd Great Wall, dates back to the Ming dynasty and is listed as a provincial cultural relic site.
