The transport strike called by various transport employee unions in Tamil Nadu demanding the 15th wage revision did not disrupt bus services in Chennai, including the operation of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses on January 9, 2024. MTC, the sole bus operator in Chennai, operated 2,098 buses against the normal 2,025 buses.
The Transport Department reported that across the state’s eight transport corporations, 8,787 buses operated compared to the usual 9,452. Demands of the striking employees include the filling of vacancies, budget allocation to offset the deficit, increased dearness allowance for retired employees, scrapping of a new pension scheme, immediate commencement of the 15th wage revision talks, and granting compassionate ground appointments. The strike had varying impacts in different districts, with some areas reporting minimal disruption to bus services.
