Train Services are to be Affected for 45 Days in Chennai as Storm-Water Drain Work Accelerates
The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated the construction of storm-water drains and box culverts next week to divert floodwater from one side of the railway track to the other, particularly in areas like Egmore and Ganesapuram. However, train services are expected to be impacted for 45 days as the Corporation has requested the Railways for “speed restriction” and “line block” to expedite the completion of the storm-water drain work in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.
Numerous flood-prevention projects, dating back several years, have remained incomplete due to railway safety concerns within the city. The Corporation’s move to fast-track the construction aims to mitigate flooding risks and improve water drainage across the tracks. It’s noted that various proposals had been delayed due to permission challenges.
The construction of a box culvert below the tracks near the Ganesapuram Subway is set to begin using push-through technology, aiming to finish within 45 days. The project’s completion is anticipated to enhance floodwater disposal from roads in north Chennai. Nonetheless, the implementation might affect suburban train services, potentially leading to cancellations.
