Three second-year engineering students, Deepak Sarathy, Mohammed Ismail, and S.Vijay Sarathy, drowned in an inoperative stone quarry near Urapakkam. The quarry, filled with stagnant water, became a popular spot for visitors despite authorities’ efforts to restrict access.
The victims, unaware of the danger, entered the water, and inadvertently reached the deeper parts, where they drowned. Fire and Rescue Services Department personnel conducted search operations and retrieved the bodies after a day-long effort. The tragic incident has led to renewed calls for better safety measures around such abandoned quarries to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
