Track Laying for Chennai Metro Rail’s Porur-Poonamallee Stretch Set to Commence in October

Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II construction is progressing rapidly, with the laying of tracks scheduled to commence at the end of next month on the Porur-Poonamallee stretch. The preparatory work for this 10-kilometer stretch will begin next week. This phase II project, with a budget of ₹61,843 crore, commenced in 2021 and aims to expand the metro network by 116 kilometers across three corridors.

The Poonamallee-Porur stretch is expected to be the first to be commissioned by the end of 2025 or early 2026. It will be an elevated stretch, with a significant portion of the viaduct work already completed. The rails to be laid are domestically manufactured, and preparatory work will continue in the coming weeks, with track laying set to start in October. Challenges such as viaduct gaps in certain areas due to recent land handovers have caused some delays in the track work process.
