Thiruvanmiyur Storm-Water Drains to Be Free of Sewage

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it is working on a permanent solution to prevent sewage waste from mixing with stormwater drains in Thiruvanmiyur. The issue arose from a petition filed by the East Kamaraj Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association regarding deteriorating sewage chambers.

The GCC’s Adyar zonal officer explained that the problem is caused by Kamaraj Nagar’s lower elevation compared to LB Road, leading to a reverse flow of rainwater into the area. To address this, a curve was constructed at the junction of Kamaraj Nagar and LB Road. The flow of stormwater is also obstructed by BSNL cables laid before the stormwater drains, which will be removed with BSNL’s assistance.

The GCC provided a timeline for completion and will report on the progress by November 30, 2023.
