Tharman Shanmugaratnam Wins Singapore Presidential Election in Landslide Victory
Tamil-origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam has secured a resounding victory in Singapore’s presidential election, receiving 70.4 percent of the vote in a three-way contest. Tharman, known for his extensive public service and political career with the People’s Action Party (PAP), vowed to build a “future of optimism” and expressed gratitude for the trust Singaporeans have placed in him.
This marks the third contested presidential election in Singapore, and Tharman will take office after the term of incumbent President Halimah Yacob ends on September 13. His victory makes him the third Tamil-origin president in Singapore’s history. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Tharman, emphasizing the importance of exercising custodial powers wisely and representing Singapore internationally.
