Temporary Dip in Tomato Prices at Chennai’s Wholesale Market
The Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai witnessed a slight drop in tomato prices as the arrivals improved on Tuesday. After reaching a record high of ₹200 per kg on Monday, the prices fell to around ₹160 to ₹170 per kg due to a marginal increase in tomato supplies. However, the retail prices remained relatively high, ranging from ₹180 to ₹190 per kg, depending on the tomato quality.
The market, which usually receives about 800 tonnes of tomatoes daily, only received 250-300 tonnes from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Reduced supplies also led to increased prices for other vegetables, such as beans (₹90 per kg) and ginger (₹180-₹200 per kg). Wholesale traders expect tomato prices to stabilize within a month, considering the current situation and supply chain dynamics.
