The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in Tamil Nadu has instructed staff at temples across the state to clean temple tanks and ensure unobstructed rainwater flow ahead of the monsoon season. This initiative covers 2,359 tanks belonging to 1,586 temples in Tamil Nadu. Staff members are tasked with clearing channels of any blocks, checking the condition of PVC pipes, and cleaning terraces.
Additionally, stormwater drains leading to these temple tanks must be cleaned to prevent sewage contamination. Minister for HR&CE P.K. Sekarbabu highlighted that temple tanks serve not only religious purposes but also help recharge groundwater levels. The state government is working on restoring and creating new tanks as part of its temple tank restoration drive.
