In anticipation of the Northeast monsoon, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has undertaken significant preparations to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state. Mass maintenance works, initiated in July and completed by October, were carried out under the direction of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
These efforts include increasing the height of pillar boxes, identifying and pruning tree branches that could damage overhead power lines, replacing damaged poles, and installing new electrical equipment. Nearly 10 lakh pieces of equipment, switches, and poles were replaced, contributing to uninterrupted power supply during heavy rains.
In Chennai, Tangedco has converted conventional distribution transformers to Ring Main Units (RMUs), which enable seamless power source transitions within seconds. Tree clearance and pole replacements have been carried out extensively, with tree branches pruned to prevent line damage and thousands of new poles installed. These proactive measures are aimed at ensuring the reliability of the power supply, particularly in regions prone to waterlogging and heavy rainfall.
