Tamil Nadu Strengthens Mangrove Protection with Village Committees

In response to the IUCN’s classification of mangroves in South India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives as critically endangered, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department has formed 20 village mangrove committees to bolster ecosystem protection. This initiative, crucial for biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and local livelihoods, aims to enhance community involvement in mangrove conservation.

Despite historical degradation from wood exploitation, agriculture, and shrimp farming, current threats include climate change impacts such as sea-level rise and cyclonic storms. Restoration efforts have already been completed across 25 sq.km. in various districts, with an additional 15 sq.km. planned under the Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission. The committees will facilitate local stewardship, ensuring sustainable management and benefits from mangrove ecosystems.
