Tambaram Corporation Takes Action to Restore Adyar River
In an effort to combat pollution in the upper reaches of the Adyar River, the Tambaram Municipal Corporation has formed special teams to monitor and penalize offenders. Over the past two months, these teams have removed 23.5 tonnes of garbage and plugged eight sewage outfalls along a 16-km stretch of the river. Areas such as Perungalathur, Thiruneermalai, Gerugambakkam, and Anakapathur have seen significant improvements.
Surveillance has been bolstered with CCTV installations, and nearly ₹2 lakh in fines have been levied on commercial and residential violators. The corporation’s plans include constructing underground drainage systems and setting up material recovery facilities to further reduce pollution and enhance river conservation.
