Taliban Delegation Visits Islamabad Amid Tensions with Afghanistan
In an attempt to de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a Taliban delegation led by Kandahar Governor Mullah Sherin Akhund is set to visit Islamabad for crucial discussions. The visit follows Pakistan’s concerns over Afghanistan’s alleged support for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist group.
Pakistan halted high-level engagement with the Taliban, citing the regime’s failure to curb the TTP. The discussions are expected to focus on terrorism, TTP, cross-border infiltrations, trade, and repatriation of illegal Afghans. The Taliban may be urged to prevent TTP attacks on Pakistan, and the visit is seen as the first round of consistent engagement between the two countries.
