Taiwan Grapples with Aftermath of Devastating Earthquake
Following Taiwan’s most powerful earthquake in 25 years, rescue efforts are underway to locate dozens of individuals who remain unaccounted for. The quake, which struck near the eastern coastal city of Hualien, inflicted widespread damage to buildings, triggering rockslides and claiming nine lives. Despite efforts to stabilise damaged structures, many buildings remain at precarious angles, posing a continued threat to residents.
The National Fire Agency reported nearly 150 individuals either trapped or out of contact, with rescue teams working tirelessly to locate and aid those in need. Landslides and infrastructure damage further complicate rescue operations, while the island grapples with the economic impact of the disaster. Taiwan’s history of seismic activity underscores the importance of preparedness and stringent construction standards in mitigating the effects of earthquakes.
