Tahawwur Rana Sought Pakistan’s ‘Nishan-e-Haider’ Award for Nine LeT Terrorists Killed in 26/11 Attacks

Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-born Canadian national, reportedly asked the Pakistani government to give the country’s highest military award, the Nishan-e-Haider, to nine members of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). These nine terrorists were killed during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008, which left over 170 people dead and hundreds injured.

According to official reports, Rana praised the role of these terrorists and called them “martyrs.” He urged Pakistani authorities to recognize them with the same military honor given to fallen soldiers. The Nishan-e-Haider is Pakistan’s most prestigious military decoration, awarded only to soldiers who show extreme bravery in battle. Rana’s request shocked many because the nine men he supported were involved in one of the deadliest terror attacks in India.

Authorities in the United States uncovered this information during an investigation. Rana is currently fighting extradition to India, where he faces charges for helping plan the Mumbai attacks. Indian officials say he played a key role in supporting David Headley, another key accused, who scouted locations in Mumbai for the LeT terrorists.

Rana’s demand for the award has caused anger in India. Officials and citizens alike strongly condemned the idea of honoring terrorists as national heroes. Security experts also warned that such statements can encourage more violence and create confusion between terrorism and patriotism.

The Indian government has already asked for Rana’s extradition so that he can face trial for his alleged crimes. U.S. courts are currently reviewing the request. Meanwhile, Indian investigators continue to gather evidence linking Rana to the planning and support of the 26/11 attacks.

This latest revelation adds to the growing list of concerns around Pakistan’s handling of terror cases. By glorifying terrorists, even through unofficial channels, individuals like Rana may damage peace efforts and deepen tensions between India and Pakistan.
