Supreme Court Stays Karnataka High Court’s Rummy Skill Game Judgment

The Supreme Court has taken a judgment from the Karnataka High Court that quashed a show cause notice issued by the GST department, demanding approximately Rs 21,000 crore from the online gaming platform ‘Gameskraft.’

The high court had held that rummy is a ‘game of skill.’ The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued the stay notice on a special leave petition filed by the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence. The matter is scheduled for a hearing in three weeks, with the Supreme Court expressing a desire to prevent other high courts in India from relying on the Karnataka High Court’s judgment passed in May 2023.
