Supreme Court Proposes Jail Courtroom for Yasin Malik Amid Security Concerns
The Supreme Court suggested setting up a courtroom inside a Delhi jail for Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik, considering security risks associated with his physical presence in a Jammu trial. The case involves the 1989 killing of four Air Force personnel, with the CBI opposing Malik’s insistence on cross-examining witnesses personally.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised concerns over Malik’s connections with Pakistani militant Hafiz Saeed and the killing of a witness in the case. Justice A.S. Oka emphasized ensuring a fair trial, citing the precedent of Ajmal Kasab’s case. While virtual connectivity for Malik’s presence was discussed, doubts were raised about reliability. The Bench adjourned the hearing to November 28, asking the CBI to revise its petition and ensure witness security.
