Supreme Court Issues Notice on Tamil Nadu’s Plea Against Governor’s Delay in Bill Assent
The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government, challenging the delay by Governor R.N. Ravi. The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, expressed serious concern over the matter and decided to seek assistance from Attorney General R. Venkataramani or Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The bench, also comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is set to hear the matter on November 20. The Tamil Nadu government contends that the Governor has positioned himself as a political rival, delaying the assent to Bills, remission orders, and approvals related to corruption cases. The plea seeks directions to stipulate a time limit for the Governor to consider Bills under Article 200 and disposal of pending files within a specified timeframe.
