Supreme Court Declines Plea for Urgent Implementation of Women Reservation Bill
The Supreme Court has rejected a plea by advocate Yogamaya MG, seeking the immediate implementation of the Women Reservation Bill before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls based on existing census data. The bench, led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, advised the petitioner to file an impleadment application in the ongoing batch of petitions addressing the same issue.
The court is already examining a PIL filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur, urging the prompt enforcement of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill 2023, which mandates a 33% reservation for women in the LS and SA. The legislation is anticipated to take full effect nationwide in 2029 after the completion of the delimitation exercise. The court indicated that it does not want multiple litigations on the matter, allowing Yogamaya MG to withdraw her PIL.
