Supreme Court Continues to Warn Against Celebratory Firing

In a recent judgment, the Supreme Court reiterated its concern over the perilous practice of celebratory firing at weddings, emphasizing the grave consequences it poses, including loss of innocent lives. This marks the second instance in two years where the court has condemned such gun-toting bravado. Previously, the court had criticized the easy availability of guns, particularly unlicensed firearms, in states like Uttar Pradesh, as a violation of the fundamental right to life enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution.

The recent case involved the tragic death of a man due to celebratory firing at a wedding, leading to the conviction of the shooter, Shahid Ali, for culpable homicide. The court’s stern stance underscores the need to curb the dangerous trend of celebratory firing to safeguard lives and uphold the rule of law.
