In a concerning turn of events, several students from the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad were detained by the police as they attempted to stage an indefinite hunger strike demanding justice for a sexual assault victim. The police stopped the protesting students at the main gate of the campus and used force to prevent them from entering.
The demonstrators, including female students, were forcibly taken to the Osmania University Police Station. Their demands included justice for the victim, the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, and the withdrawal of FIRs against students.
The EFLU Students Community had also called for a boycott of classes. National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leaders were also detained when they tried to stage a protest in support of the students. The incident has raised questions about the handling of the sexual assault case and the student’s right to peaceful protest.
