Streamlining the Removal and Scrapping of Abandoned Vehicles in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police and local police, has been actively working to remove abandoned vehicles from city streets, achieving notable progress with the recent scrapping of 731 vehicles. This initiative addresses the long-standing issue of abandoned cars cluttering public spaces, often left by owners unwilling to part with them or lacking adequate parking facilities. Residents play a crucial role by filing FIRs for vehicles left unclaimed for extended periods, prompting police investigations.

Challenges persist, including paperwork, determining ownership, and dealing with vehicles in non-operational conditions or involved in criminal activities. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways encourages responsible vehicle disposal through the vscrap portal, offering financial incentives and ensuring eco-friendly scrapping processes. Organizations like CERO facilitate this by providing pick-up services, issuing certificates of deposit, and ensuring secure recycling of vehicle components, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
