The State Oil Crisis Management Group, chaired by Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, has directed the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) to enhance efforts to mitigate the oil spill in Ennore, North Chennai. The group instructed CPCL to deploy additional oil boomers, skimmers, and trained manpower while ensuring strict safety measures for the workforce involved.
Oil boomers have been deployed to contain the spread, and an oil skimmer machine is already in operation, with plans to deploy four more in the next two days. To expedite mitigation, 75 boats, and 300 personnel are engaged in extracting oil from the water surface, and gully sucker machines are in use.
The cleaning of oil-soaked debris in nearby villages has commenced, employing earth movers and equipment. CPCL has arranged additional booms and containment measures aim at preventing the spill from reaching the sea. Health and relief measures, including PPE distribution and medical camps, are underway, and the Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner and Director of Fisheries are tasked with a comprehensive review of impacted families.
