Sri Lankan Government Firm on Presidential Election Schedule

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding the presidential election as scheduled in 2024, dismissing a proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s party to postpone both presidential and general elections. Gunawardena emphasized adherence to the Constitution, stating that the Election Commission has the authority to call elections within specified dates.

He denounced the proposal as “irresponsible” and reiterated the government’s dedication to upholding democracy, citing the restoration of democratic processes since 2022. The Election Commission echoed this sentiment, asserting that the presidential election would proceed as planned between September and October, with parliamentary elections scheduled for 2025. PAFFREL warned of legal action against any attempts to delay the elections, emphasizing the importance of democratic principles in Sri Lanka’s political landscape.
