Southern Railway Advances on Chennai Beach-Egmore Fourth Line Project
The Southern Railway is making significant strides in the fourth line project between Chennai Beach and Egmore, with an expected completion date set for March next year. The project, valued at ₹279 crore for a 4.3 km stretch, aims to enhance track connectivity in the city and provide operational flexibility for train services from Chennai Egmore and Tambaram terminal.
The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) operating from Chennai Beach to Velachery has been curtailed to Chintadripet railway station since August 27 to facilitate the construction. Chief Public Relations Officer B. Guganesan highlighted the ongoing demolition of a portion of the Park Town railway station building, pile foundation work along the Cooum River, completion of three minor bridge works on the Buckingham Canal, and acquisition of land from Madras Medical College with boundary wall construction completed.
Foundation work for a major bridge across the Buckingham Canal and platform dismantling at railway stations like Fort, Park Town (MRTS), and Chennai Park are also in progress.
