South Korea to Complain to UN Maritime Agency If Japan Alters Fukushima Water Release Plan
South Korea’s Oceans Ministry has warned that it will file a complaint against Japan with the UN maritime safety agency if Tokyo deviates from its original plan regarding the release of contaminated water from power plant. Japan recently began discharging radioactive water from the plant into the sea.
South Korea has called for discussions on the potential environmental impact of this release during the London Convention and Protocol framework meeting under the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Japan, however, has rejected this call, arguing that the discharge should not be considered marine dumping. South Korea is prepared to use international dispute settlement tools if Japan doesn’t adhere to its initial promises.
