South Korea Expands Special Disaster Zones Amid Wildfire Devastation
South Korea’s Acting President Han Duck-soo has expanded the list of special disaster zones to include four more jurisdictions in North Gyeongsang Province—Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok—following devastating wildfires.
The new designations entitle these areas to government support for recovery and victim relief. The wildfires, which have already killed 26 people and injured 30 others, have destroyed approximately 36,000 hectares of land, surpassing the previous record from 2000. Over 37,000 people have been displaced, with significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
The government has pledged to swiftly repair the damage and provide administrative and financial assistance. Emergency efforts continue as firefighters battle the flames, with helicopters and fire trucks deployed to control the spread. Concerns have been raised over the safety of elderly victims, including those in nursing homes, prompting additional care for their health and safety.
