South Korea Considers Joining AUKUS for Military Technology Sharing
South Korea is contemplating joining the AUKUS partnership, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, for sharing advanced military technology. Defense Minister Shin Won-sik revealed discussions on this matter following meetings between South Korea and Australia’s Defense and Foreign Ministers in Melbourne.
Under AUKUS Pillar 2, cooperation may extend to various security technologies such as artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and hypersonic systems. Japan is also exploring the possibility of joining AUKUS Pillar 2 for technology development and sharing. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles hailed South Korea’s efforts to strengthen ties with Japan, highlighting the move as a positive step for regional strategic cooperation, particularly within the Quad framework.
