Sonia Gandhi Stresses on Secularism as a Pillar of India’s Democracy
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has emphasized the importance of secularism as a foundational pillar of India’s democracy. In a signed article for the Manorama Yearbook 2024, Gandhi noted that the term secular is being used pejoratively by those in power, leading to increased polarization in society. She highlighted the interconnectedness of democracy and secularism, describing them as two rails guiding the nation to harmony.
Gandhi emphasized Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of ‘sarva dharma sama bhaava’ and Jawaharlal Nehru’s efforts to establish a secular state in India. She expressed concern about the assault on India’s Constitution and the need to protect the welfare of minorities. Gandhi urged a celebration of diversity and unity, emphasizing the principles laid down by India’s freedom fighters to guard against democratic ailments.
