Slovenia Joins European Trend in Recognizing Palestinian State
In a significant move, Slovenia became the latest European country to recognize a Palestinian state, following similar decisions by Spain, Norway, and Ireland. The Slovenian parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of the motion, with 52 lawmakers supporting the recognition. Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon highlighted the decision as a message of hope and peace for Palestinians, emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Robert Golob underscored Slovenia’s historical parallels with Palestine, drawing attention to their shared aspirations for self-determination. Despite opposition from the Slovenian Democratic Party, which sought a referendum on the issue, the recognition reflects Slovenia’s commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and addressing the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
