Singapore-Style Kalaignar Memorial Centenary Park to Grace Chennai’s Cathedral Road

Chennai is set to welcome a new landmark in the form of the Kalaignar Memorial Centenary Park, which will adorn a 6.09-acre plot on Cathedral Road, akin to the Botanical Garden and Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. The ambitious project, announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his Independence Day speech, is allocated a budget of ₹25 crore.

The land was recently reclaimed from the Agri Horticultural Society following a 33-year legal dispute, with the Madras High Court ruling in favor of the State government in June.

The Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops, which previously transformed another plot, Senganthal Poonga, into a park, will oversee the development of both areas in a unified manner. Notably, officials visited Singapore to glean inspiration from its innovative park designs.
