Security Provided for Inter-Faith Couple in Kanpur Amid Controversy
Kanpur police have arranged for security to protect an inter-faith couple seeking to solemnize their marriage under the Special Marriage Act. This decision comes in the wake of a viral video depicting the ‘nikah’ (Muslim wedding ceremony) of a Hindu youth named Aman and a Muslim girl in the city’s Chaubeypur area, which caused turmoil within his family and the local community.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Dhul, the couple had applied to the court for their marriage under the Special Marriage Act, but due to a court strike, their wedding could not proceed as planned. Given the family’s boycott of the couple, adequate security measures have been put in place.
Although the video claimed that Aman had converted to Islam and married the girl following Muslim rituals, he later clarified in a video that he had not converted but had merely followed Muslim customs for their marriage.
