Indian skipper Rohit Sharma achieved a remarkable feat during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens by equaling AB de Villiers’ record for hitting the most One Day International (ODI) sixes in a calendar year. Rohit surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who previously held the second spot with 56 sixes in 2019.
It took the 36-year-old Rohit 23 innings to reach this milestone, just five more than de Villiers. During his 40-run innings, Rohit hit two sixes off Lungi Ngidi to reach the impressive mark of 58 sixes before being caught by Temba Bavuma off Kagiso Rabada in the sixth over.
India had an explosive start, scoring fifty in just 4.3 overs, finishing the powerplay at 91 for 1, making it the second-highest runs conceded in the first 10 overs by South Africa in the tournament.
