Farmers in Tamil Nadu’s delta region have announced plans for a road blockade on July 25 as a form of protest against Karnataka’s failure to release Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, in accordance with a Supreme Court order.
The general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, Sami Natarajan, expressed concern that the inadequate release of water would lead to the withering of “kuruvai” crops in the tail-end areas.
He emphasized that for the kuruvai crop to survive, Karnataka must release the owed 122.24 tmcft of Cauvery water for the months of June, July, and August. The farmers’ protest highlights the urgency of the situation and the crucial role of water availability for agricultural activities in the region.
