Retteri Lake Revitalization Project: A Crucial Step Towards Water Security

The rejuvenation of Retteri Lake, part of Chennai’s vital water source network, has commenced with a comprehensive project costing ₹43.19 crore. As a buffer source for Chennai’s drinking water supply, the lake’s restoration includes deepening, desilting, and increasing its storage capacity to 46 million cubic feet. The Water Resources Department has initiated efforts to remove accumulated silt, aiming to clear nearly seven lakh cubic meters from the lake bed.

Additionally, plans are underway to construct three islands as bird nesting grounds, utilizing silt from the lake. Measures to address sewage pollution, encroachments, and stormwater drains are essential for a holistic rejuvenation process, with agencies working towards preventing further contamination of the water body.
